Основные зоны субдукции расположены по периметру Тихого и Атлантического океанов. Наиболее тектонически активные участки прилегают к побережьям Японии, Чили, Курильских островов, Камчатки, Алеутских островов, Аляски и Индонезии. Здесь скорость движения океанической плиты достигает 6–8 см/год. Как следствие время от времени здесь происходят мощные подводные землетрясения и цунами. В России наиболее подвержены возникновению цунами восточные побережья Камчатки и Курильских островов, остров Сахалин и побережье Тихого океана. Наибольшие высоты волн 9–11 м отмечены на побережье Второго Курильского пролива, здесь они примерно в 1,5–2 раза больше чем на открытом тихоокеанском побережье северных Курил и юго-восточной Камчатки. Это наиболее цунамиопасный участок в данном районе. Еще один участок, на котором наблюдалось локальное усиление цунами при крайнем юго-западном положении источника – юго-восточное побережье о. Парамушир, между м. Океанский и м. Васильева (б. Океанская, Подгорное) .  Довольно высока степень опасности цунами на о. Онекотан (б. Муссель с океанской стороны) .
