What is the Ecliptic?
The ecliptic is the apparent path that the Sun follows as it appears to move across the sky over the course of a year. It is the projection of the Earth's orbit onto the celestial sphere. This path is also followed by the Moon and the planets. The ecliptic is an important reference for astronomers and is used as the basis for the ecliptic coordinate system, which is similar to the more familiar system of celestial coordinates based on the celestial equator and the poles of the sky.
The ecliptic is inclined at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees to the celestial equator. This inclination is due to the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to its orbit around the Sun. As a result, the Sun appears to move north and south of the celestial equator over the course of a year, creating the changing seasons on Earth
