Problem Analysis

To solve this problem, we need to determine whether there are more tennis players or swimmers in the class. We are given the following information: - All students in the 6th grade are either in the tennis section or the swimming section. - Some students participate in both tennis and swimming. - 1/6 of the tennis players also swim. - 1/5 of the swimmers also play tennis.

Solution

Let's assume there are a total of x students in the class. We can use this assumption to solve the problem.

Let's break down the information given: - 1/6 of the tennis players also swim. This means that 1/6 * x students play both tennis and swim. - 1/5 of the swimmers also play tennis. This means that 1/5 * x students swim and play tennis.

To find the number of students who only play tennis, we subtract the number of students who play both sports from the total number of tennis players: Tennis players - Tennis players who also swim = Tennis players only So, the number of students who only play tennis is (x - 1/6 * x).

Similarly, to find the number of students who only swim, we subtract the number of students who play both sports from the total number of swimmers: Swimmers - Swimmers who also play tennis = Swimmers only So, the number of students who only swim is (x - 1/5 * x).

Now, we can compare the number of tennis players and swimmers to determine which group is larger.

Calculation

Let's calculate the number of tennis players and swimmers using the given information.

The number of tennis players is (x - 1/6 * x). The number of swimmers is (x - 1/5 * x).

To determine which group is larger, we can compare these two values.

Answer

To determine whether there are more tennis players or swimmers in the class, we need to compare the number of tennis players and swimmers.

Let's calculate the number of tennis players and swimmers using the given information:

- The number of tennis players is (x - 1/6 * x). - The number of swimmers is (x - 1/5 * x).

We can see that the number of tennis players is (x - 1/6 * x), and the number of swimmers is (x - 1/5 * x).

Unfortunately, the given information does not provide the value of x, which represents the total number of students in the class. Without this information, we cannot determine which group is larger.

To solve this problem, we need to know the total number of students in the class. Once we have that information, we can calculate the number of tennis players and swimmers and compare the two groups.
