Радянський програміст і математик, один з творців «шкільної інформатики», лідер в області теорії й автоматизації програмування, основні праці якого охоплюють теоретичне й системне програмування, мови програмування, теорію схем програм, мішані обчислення.     Завдяки унікальним здібностям наукового передбачення, А. П. Єршов одним перших у країні усвідомив ключову роль обчислювальної техніки в прогресі науки й суспільства й з початку 80-х рр. почав активно займатися педагогічною діяльністю, спрямованою на просування програмування, а потім й інформатики в систему освіти, а також масову свідомість.     В 1985-86 рр. А. П. Єршовим разом із групою співавторів були підготовлені й випущені пробні навчальні посібники для середніх навчальних закладів «Основи інформатики й обчислювальної техніки» (частина I і частина II — для 9-10 класів) і під його науковим керівництвом почалося викладання інформатики як навчального предмета у всіх школах Радянського Союзу.Основоположник інформаційних технологій в Україні, засновник і директор Інституту кібернетики АН УРСР (1962-1982), віце-президент Академії наук УРСР (1962-1982), академік АН УРСР (1961) і АН СРСР (1964), лауреат Ленінської премії (1964), Державних премій СРСР (1968, 1977), Державної премії УРСР (1970).З 1962 року директор Інституту кібернетики АН УССР. В цьому Інституті під його науковим керівництвом було розроблено ЕОМ "Киев" і першу в Україні та колишньому СРСР напівпровідникову керуючу машину широкого призначення "Днепр". Попередниками персональних комп'ютерів стали машини для інженерних розрахунків "Промінь" (1963), "Мир-1" (1966), "Мир-2" (1969), у яких було реалізовано запропоновану В. М. Глушковим ідею ступеневого мікропрограмного управління.
