What is the arithmetic mean?
The arithmetic mean, also known as the average, is a measure of central tendency that represents the typical value of a set of numbers. It is calculated by summing up all the numbers in the set and dividing the sum by the total number of values in the set. The arithmetic mean is widely used in various fields, including mathematics, statistics, and everyday life, to analyze and interpret data.
In mathematical notation, the arithmetic mean is often represented by the symbol "μ" (mu) for a population mean or "x̄" (x-bar) for a sample mean. The formula for calculating the arithmetic mean is:
Arithmetic Mean = (Sum of all values) / (Total number of values)
For example, let's say we have a set of numbers: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. To find the arithmetic mean of this set, we add up all the numbers (5 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 25 = 75) and divide the sum by the total number of values (5). Therefore, the arithmetic mean of this set is 75/5 = 15.
It's important to note that the arithmetic mean is sensitive to extreme values, as it takes into account all the values in the set. If there are outliers or extreme values, they can significantly affect the arithmetic mean.
