Gas Laws and Mendeleev's Periodic Table Formulas
The three main gas laws are:
- Boyle's law: At a constant temperature, the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional. As the volume increases, the pressure decreases.
- Charles's law: At a constant pressure, the volume and temperature of a gas are directly proportional. As the temperature increases, the volume increases.
- Gay-Lussac's law: At a constant volume, the pressure and temperature of a gas are directly proportional. As the temperature increases, the pressure increases.
These gas laws can be expressed mathematically using the following formulas:
- `P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2` (Boyle's law) - `V1/T1 = V2/T2` (Charles's law) - `P1/T1 = P2/T2` (Gay-Lussac's law)
Mendeleev organized the chemical elements in his periodic table based on their atomic masses. He left gaps for elements that were not yet discovered but whose properties he was able to predict based on their position in the periodic table. Some key points about Mendeleev's periodic table include:
- It was the first periodic table to arrange the elements in order of atomic mass so that elements with similar properties fell into vertical columns called groups.
- Elements with similar properties were placed in the same group. For example, the halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine) were placed together in Group 17.
- Mendeleev predicted the properties of elements that were yet to be discovered based on their position in the periodic table. For example, he predicted the properties of gallium and germanium decades before they were discovered.
