Problem Analysis

We are given two trains traveling towards each other from two different stations. The distance between the stations is 385 km. The first train started 2 hours earlier and is traveling at a speed of 53 km/h. After 3 hours of the second train's departure, the trains meet. We need to find the speed of the second train.

Solution

To find the speed of the second train, we can use the formula:

Speed = Distance / Time

Let's calculate the time it took for the trains to meet. The first train traveled for 3 hours longer than the second train, so the time for the first train can be represented as (t + 3), where t is the time for the second train.

The total distance traveled by both trains is equal to the distance between the stations, which is 385 km.

The distance traveled by the first train can be calculated as the product of its speed and time: 53 * (t + 3).

The distance traveled by the second train can be calculated as the product of its speed and time: Speed of the second train * t.

Setting up the equation:

53 * (t + 3) + Speed of the second train * t = 385

Simplifying the equation:

53t + 159 + Speed of the second train * t = 385

Combining like terms:

(53 + Speed of the second train) * t + 159 = 385

Subtracting 159 from both sides:

(53 + Speed of the second train) * t = 385 - 159

Simplifying:

(53 + Speed of the second train) * t = 226

Dividing both sides by (53 + Speed of the second train):

t = 226 / (53 + Speed of the second train)

Now we can solve for the speed of the second train by substituting the value of t into the equation:

Speed of the second train = 385 / t

Let's calculate the speed of the second train using this formula.

Calculation

We'll start by calculating the value of t using the equation t = 226 / (53 + Speed of the second train).

Let's assume the speed of the second train is x km/h.

t = 226 / (53 + x)

Now, we can substitute the value of t into the equation Speed of the second train = 385 / t.

Speed of the second train = 385 / (226 / (53 + x))

Simplifying:

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226

Let's calculate the speed of the second train using this formula.

Calculation

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226

Using the given values, we can substitute 53 for the speed of the first train:

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226

Speed of the second train = 385 * (53 + x) / 226
