Problem Analysis
We are given that two girls are running towards each other on a sports track. The length of the track is 420m. When they meet, the first girl has run 60m more than the second girl. We need to find the speed at which each girl is running, given that they meet after 30 seconds.Solution
Let's assume that the speed of the first girl is x meters per second and the speed of the second girl is y meters per second.We know that the distance traveled by each girl is equal to their speed multiplied by the time taken. Since they meet after 30 seconds, the distance traveled by the first girl is 30x meters, and the distance traveled by the second girl is 30y meters.
According to the problem, the first girl has run 60m more than the second girl when they meet. So, we can write the following equation:
30x = 30y + 60
To solve this equation, we can rearrange it to isolate one variable:
30x - 30y = 60
Now, we can divide both sides of the equation by 30 to simplify it:
x - y = 2
From this equation, we can see that the speed of the first girl is 2 meters per second more than the speed of the second girl.
To find the individual speeds of the girls, we can use the fact that the total distance traveled by both girls is equal to the length of the track, which is 420m:
30x + 30y = 420
Now, we can substitute the value of x - y from the previous equation into this equation:
30(x - y) + 30y = 420
Simplifying this equation, we get:
30x - 30y + 30y = 420
30x = 420
Dividing both sides of the equation by 30, we find:
x = 14
So, the speed of the first girl is 14 meters per second.
To find the speed of the second girl, we can substitute the value of x into the equation x - y = 2:
14 - y = 2
Simplifying this equation, we get:
-y = -12
Dividing both sides of the equation by -1, we find:
y = 12
So, the speed of the second girl is 12 meters per second.
Answer
The first girl is running at a speed of 14 meters per second, and the second girl is running at a speed of 12 meters per second.Please let me know if you need any further assistance!
