Why are skis and poles changed in biathlon?

In biathlon, skis and poles are changed for different reasons related to the specific requirements of the sport. The combination of skiing and shooting in biathlon presents unique challenges that require athletes to adapt their equipment during the race.

1. Ski Changes:

One reason skis are changed in biathlon is to optimize performance on different sections of the course. Biathlon courses typically consist of both uphill and downhill sections, as well as flat sections. Different types of skis are better suited for each type of terrain.

- Classic Skis: Classic skis are used for uphill and flat sections of the course. They have a grip zone under the foot that allows the athlete to push off efficiently and maintain traction on the snow. - Skate Skis: Skate skis are used for downhill and flat sections of the course. They have a smooth glide surface that allows athletes to achieve higher speeds and maneuverability.

By changing skis during the race, biathletes can ensure they have the most suitable equipment for each section of the course, maximizing their speed and efficiency.

2. Pole Changes:

Pole changes in biathlon serve multiple purposes:

- Shooting Stability: Biathletes need stability while shooting, and longer poles can provide better balance and support. However, longer poles can be less efficient for skiing. Therefore, athletes often use shorter poles while skiing and switch to longer poles before entering the shooting range to improve stability during shooting. - Shooting Technique: Biathletes may also change poles to adapt their shooting technique. Some athletes prefer to use shorter poles to allow for a more compact shooting position, while others may use longer poles to provide additional support and stability.

By changing poles, biathletes can optimize their shooting performance while maintaining efficiency during skiing.

In summary, skis and poles are changed in biathlon to adapt to the different terrains of the course and optimize performance in both skiing and shooting. Skis are changed to match the specific requirements of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, while poles are changed to provide stability and support during shooting.
