Example of Diffusion

A classic example of diffusion is the spreading of a scent or odor in a room. When a strong-smelling substance, such as perfume or air freshener, is sprayed in one corner of a room, the scent molecules start to spread out and mix with the air molecules. Over time, the scent becomes detectable in other parts of the room, even if the initial concentration was higher near the source. This is because the scent molecules diffuse from an area of higher concentration (near the source) to an area of lower concentration (other parts of the room) until the concentration becomes uniform throughout the room.

Another example of diffusion is the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide across the respiratory membrane in the lungs. When we breathe in, oxygen molecules in the air enter the lungs and diffuse across the thin walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream, where they bind to hemoglobin in red blood cells. On the other hand, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses from the bloodstream into the alveoli and is then exhaled. This process of diffusion ensures the exchange of gases necessary for respiration.
