The Problem:

In an old English garden, there is a pond where a water lily doubles in size every night. After 100 nights, the water lily has filled the entire pond. The question asks how many nights it took for the water lily to fill half of the pond, and also how many nights it would take for four water lilies to fill the pond.

Solution:

To solve this problem, we need to understand the pattern of the water lily's growth. We know that the water lily doubles in size every night. Let's analyze the problem step by step.

a) How many nights did it take for the water lily to fill half of the pond?

To find the number of nights it took for the water lily to fill half of the pond, we need to work backward from the 100th night when the pond was completely filled.

Since the water lily doubles in size every night, we can conclude that on the night before the pond was completely filled, the water lily must have been half the size of the pond. Therefore, it took 99 nights for the water lily to fill half of the pond.

b) How many nights would it take for four water lilies to fill the pond?

To find the number of nights it would take for four water lilies to fill the pond, we can use the same logic as before.

Since each water lily doubles in size every night, we can say that four water lilies would fill the pond in the same number of nights it took for one water lily to fill half of the pond. From part a), we know that it took 99 nights for one water lily to fill half of the pond. Therefore, it would also take 99 nights for four water lilies to fill the pond.

Conclusion:

a) It took 99 nights for the water lily to fill half of the pond. b) If there were four water lilies instead of one, it would still take 99 nights for them to fill the pond.
