The Term "Geography" and Eratosthenes
The term "geography" was first coined by Eratosthenes, who lived in ancient Greece during the 3rd century BCE Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who made significant contributions to the field of geography. He is often referred to as the "father of geography" due to his pioneering work in the subject.
Eratosthenes is known for his calculation of the Earth's circumference, which he accomplished using a method involving the measurement of shadows cast by objects in different locations. By comparing the lengths of these shadows, he was able to estimate the Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy for his time.
Eratosthenes also created one of the earliest known maps of the world, known as the "Eratosthenes Map." This map depicted the known world at the time, including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Although the original map has not survived, it is believed to have been based on the geographical knowledge available during Eratosthenes' time.
