Problem Analysis

We are given that a passenger train is traveling behind a freight train. At 6:00 AM, the distance between them is 70 km. The passenger train has a speed of 80 km/h, while the freight train has a speed of 60 km/h. We need to determine if the passenger train will catch up to the freight train by 9:00 AM and calculate the time it takes for them to meet.

Calculation

To determine if the passenger train will catch up to the freight train, we need to compare the distances traveled by both trains. Let's calculate the distances traveled by each train from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

The passenger train travels at a speed of 80 km/h for 3 hours (from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM), so the distance it covers is: Distance covered by passenger train = Speed * Time = 80 km/h * 3 h = 240 km

The freight train travels at a speed of 60 km/h for 3 hours (from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM), so the distance it covers is: Distance covered by freight train = Speed * Time = 60 km/h * 3 h = 180 km

Now, let's compare the distances traveled by both trains. If the distance covered by the passenger train is greater than or equal to the initial distance between the trains (70 km), then the passenger train will catch up to the freight train.

Distance covered by passenger train = 240 km Distance covered by freight train = 180 km Initial distance between the trains = 70 km

Since 240 km is greater than 70 km, the passenger train will catch up to the freight train.

Time of Meeting

To calculate the time of meeting, we need to determine the time it takes for the passenger train to cover the initial distance between the trains (70 km). We can use the formula:

Time = Distance / Speed

Time taken by the passenger train to cover 70 km = 70 km / 80 km/h = 0.875 hours

Therefore, the passenger train will catch up to the freight train in 0.875 hours, which is equivalent to 52.5 minutes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the passenger train will catch up to the freight train by 9:00 AM. The meeting between the two trains will occur approximately 52.5 minutes after 6:00 AM.

Please note that the calculations provided are based on the given information and assumptions.
