Chemical Reaction with Catalyst
A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another. This transformation occurs through the breaking and forming of chemical bonds. A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change.
An example of a chemical reaction involving a catalyst is the hydrogen peroxide decomposition. In this reaction, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) gas. This reaction occurs slowly at room temperature but can be accelerated by the presence of a catalyst, such as manganese dioxide (MnO2).
The balanced chemical equation for this reaction is:
2 H2O2 (aq) → 2 H2O (l) + O2 (g)
The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst in this reaction, and the overall reaction can be represented as follows:
2 H2O2 (aq) → 2 H2O (l) + O2 (g) (in the presence of MnO2)
The manganese dioxide provides a surface for the reaction to occur more readily, allowing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to proceed at a much faster rate than it would without the catalyst.
This example demonstrates how a catalyst can facilitate a chemical reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy, thus increasing the rate of the reaction without being consumed in the process.
