Magnetic Properties of Copper
Copper is a non-magnetic metal, meaning it does not possess any significant magnetic properties. It is classified as a diamagnetic material, which means it generates a weak magnetic field in the opposite direction when exposed to an external magnetic field. However, this diamagnetic effect is very weak and is often overshadowed by other magnetic materials in close proximity.
Magnetic Properties of Iron
Iron, on the other hand, is a highly magnetic material. It is classified as a ferromagnetic material, which means it exhibits strong magnetic properties. Iron has a high magnetic susceptibility, which allows it to be easily magnetized and retain its magnetization even after the external magnetic field is removed.
Iron's magnetic properties are due to its atomic structure. In its pure form, iron consists of tiny magnetic domains, which are regions where the magnetic moments of individual atoms align in the same direction. When an external magnetic field is applied, these domains align themselves with the field, resulting in a macroscopic magnetization of the iron.
Iron is widely used in various applications that require magnetic properties, such as in the production of magnets, transformers, electric motors, and magnetic storage devices.
