Type of Chemical Bond in BaCl2
BaCl2, also known as barium chloride, is an inorganic compound. It consists of one barium atom (Ba) and two chlorine atoms (Cl). The type of chemical bond in BaCl2 is an ionic bond.
Ionic bonds occur between atoms with significantly different electronegativities. In the case of BaCl2, barium has a lower electronegativity than chlorine. This difference in electronegativity causes the barium atom to donate electrons to the chlorine atoms, resulting in the formation of positive and negative ions. The barium atom loses two electrons to become a positively charged ion (Ba2+), while the two chlorine atoms gain one electron each to become negatively charged ions (Cl-).
The attraction between the positively charged barium ions and the negatively charged chlorine ions creates the ionic bond in BaCl2. This bond is characterized by the electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charges.
