Food Additives and their Classification

Food additives are substances added to food to enhance its flavor, appearance, texture, or shelf life. They are regulated by food safety authorities to ensure they are safe for consumption. Some food additives have names that start with the letter "E" followed by three numbers, such as E121, E123, E216, E217, and E240. These numbers are part of the international numbering system for food additives, known as the E number system.

The E number system was developed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and is used globally to identify and regulate food additives. Each E number corresponds to a specific food additive and indicates its purpose and safety level. The numbers are assigned based on scientific evaluations conducted by experts to determine the safety and suitability of the additives for consumption.

Classification of E121, E123, E216, E217, and E240

The food additives E121, E123, E216, E217, and E240 belong to different categories and serve different purposes. Here is a breakdown of their classifications:

1. E121 (Citrus Red 2): E121 is a food coloring agent that is used to give a red color to certain foods and beverages. It is derived from coal tar and is primarily used in the United States. However, its use is banned in the European Union due to safety concerns [[1]].

2. E123 (Amaranth): E123 is a food coloring agent that provides a red color to various food products. It is derived from coal tar and is used in a wide range of food and beverage applications. However, its use is restricted in some countries due to potential health risks [[2]].

3. E216 (Propylparaben) and E217 (Sodium Propylparaben): E216 and E217 are preservatives that are used to prevent the growth of microorganisms in food and extend its shelf life. They belong to the group of parabens, which are commonly used as preservatives in various products. However, there have been concerns about their potential hormonal effects, and their use is regulated in some countries [[3]].

4. E240 (Formic Acid): E240 is a food preservative that is used to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in food. It is a naturally occurring substance found in various fruits and vegetables. However, its use is limited to certain food products and is subject to regulatory restrictions [[4]].

It is important to note that the safety of food additives is continuously monitored and evaluated by food safety authorities. The use of food additives is regulated to ensure that they are used in safe quantities and do not pose a risk to consumer health. Consumers can refer to food labeling and consult with healthcare professionals if they have specific concerns about food additives.
