Propylbenzene, also known as 1-phenylpropane, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C9H12. It belongs to the class of aromatic hydrocarbons and is derived from benzene by replacing one of the hydrogen atoms with a propyl group (-C3H7).
Propylbenzene has three possible isomers based on the position of the propyl group relative to the phenyl group. These isomers are:
n-Propylbenzene: In this isomer, the propyl group is attached to the benzene ring at the first carbon atom, resulting in a linear structure. Its systematic name is 1-phenylpropane.
Isopropylbenzene: In this isomer, the propyl group is attached to the benzene ring at the second carbon atom, resulting in a branched structure. Its systematic name is 2-phenylpropane.
sec-Propylbenzene: In this isomer, the propyl group is attached to the benzene ring at the third carbon atom, resulting in another branched structure. Its systematic name is 3-phenylpropane.
The structural formulas of these isomers are as follows:
n-Propylbenzene: C6H5CH2CH2CH3 (Benzene ring with the propyl group attached to the first carbon atom)
Isopropylbenzene: (CH3)2CHC6H5 (Benzene ring with the propyl group attached to the second carbon atom)
sec-Propylbenzene: CH3CH(CH3)CH2C6H5 (Benzene ring with the propyl group attached to the third carbon atom)
These isomers exhibit different physical and chemical properties due to the variations in their molecular structures and the position of the propyl group on the benzene ring.
