Kabuki is a worldwide known type of Japanese national theatre. It is a traditional theatre that combines genres of dance, singing, drama, and musical compositions. Kabuki appeared only in the 17th century. The origins of this genre are the ritual dances performed by the priestesses of the ancient cults. Back in the 17th and 18th centuries, only scenes from everyday life were performed on kabuki stage. At that time all the roles were played only by women. The first troupe of the theatre was invited to perform in front of the Emperor himself. Everyday scenes, as a theme for theatrical productions, ceased to be the basis of the repertoire in the late 17th century. They were replaced by national dances and dramatic art. In that period the genre of kabuki was rapidly changing. During the second half of the 19th century, the popularity of kabuki theatre drastically declined. Some researches show that the widespread europeanization led to the fact that Kabuki was being reconstructed on the European model. Unfortunately, the audience did not like most of its changes. In 1928, kabuki stopped being a part of only Japanese culture and started to appear in different parts of the world. People who supported this genre began to travel around the globe, showing their performances in the Soviet Union, the United States and many other countries. It is interesting that all the roles were played by men by the middle of the 20th century. Due to this fact, many actors were taken to the front when the Second World war started. The bombing destroyed lots of theatre buildings, and those stages that managed to survive became clubs for the military. Moreover, many plays were banned. In 1945, the Kabuki theatrical troupe "Zensinza" resumed its activity and presented to the audience a new play. This play soon became a symbol of the classical repertoire of any kabuki theatre. During the second half of the 20th century the genre was developing and getting more and more positive reviews. Investors started to contribute in theatres around the globe and kabuki began to thrive. Soon the unique Japanese performances gained enormous popularity. In 2005, Kabuki was included in the "third Declaration of heritage masterpieces". Now, this genre is officially recognised by UNESCO. People around the world appreciate and love kabuki theatre. Many actors who play roles in theatrical productions also play in movies and participate in TV shows. Test Choose the answer and click on it.
