There is a weak safety net for the unemployed and minimally employed compared to most other developed countries.

New Zealand has a minimum wage for all workers of $15 per hour. Granted, their $ averages around 72–75% of the US $ and is 7–10% less than the Australian or Canadian $. There is a guaranteed government pension at age 65 for all citizens. As a whole the citizens are hard workers and have a good lifestyle.

My wife and I were born and raised in America and have been retired for close to 10 years. Since our retirement we have chosen to live just under half the year in New Zealand and the rest of the year in Idaho. (We get 2 summers per year as a result and don’t have to shovel snow). We love the beauty of the country, the climate, and the graciousness of the Kiwi people. Advantage that we didn’t have to learn a foreign language. We are not in the safety net of their socialized medicine and have to rely on Medicare when we are back in the US except for minor occasional care. We have been told that we are covered while in NZ in the event of a catastrophic accident. Fortunately we are in good health and will continue living in NZ for as long as we are healthy and able to handle the long flights.
