THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME Spending a year in a foreign country has always been popular with university students, but now more secondary school students are also studying abroad and one of the most popular destinations is New Zealand. We asked two teenagers why they chose New Zealand. I spent last year at a co-educational state secondary school in Christchurch. I chose New Zealand because it is a beautiful and safe country and people speak English. I wasn't disappointed. There were 1,400 students, including 50 foreigners, at my school. I was a bit homesick at first because my English wasn't brilliant, but I soon made a lot of friends and got used to the lifestyle. It's less stressful than here in Germany and people are more relaxed. The teachers were caring and my host family was really kind. Outdoor sports are big in New Zealand and I discovered a lot of new interests: sailing, mountaineering and ... yes, rugby! You can't find better than New Zealand for a year abroad.
