The total number of cheetahs in the early XX century in Africa and Asia reached 100 000 individuals, but a century decreased by almost 90%. At present, it is believed that 9-12 thousand cheetahs inhabits the world. The cheetah is listed in the "Red Book" as a zoological species, which is threatened with extinction. Because the damage caused cheetah farming and hunting economy, is insignificant. It is not dangerous the predator and humans. Nevertheless, for many years, due to a misunderstanding, the cheetah was considered a predator, dangerous for the cattle, and exterminated in various ways. There are also indirect way - reducing the area caused by the destruction of species habitat due to the increase of population, the cultivation of land and the reduction of the number of types of natural prey. Even in protected areas cheetah reduced chances of survival because of the competition from the more aggressive predators - lions, hyenas and leopards, which are the natural enemies of the cheetah, which leads to increasing migration cheetah on unprotected land where it comes into conflict with the local population because of attacks on livestock.

Общая численность гепарда в начале XX века в Африке и Азии достигала 100 000 особей, но за столетие сократились почти на 90%. На сегодня считается, что  в мире обитает 9-12 тысяч гепардов. Гепард занесен в "Красную Книгу" как зоологический вид, который находится под угрозой исчезновения. Потому что вред, наносимый гепардом фермерскому и охотничьему хозяйству, ничтожен. Совершенно не опасен этот хищник и для человека. Тем не менее долгие годы, по недоразумению, гепарда считали хищником, опасным для скота, и истребляли всевозможными способами. Есть и опосредованный путь – сокращение ареала, вызванное уничтожением среды обитания вида в связи с увеличением народонаселения, культивацией земель и сокращением численности видов естественной добычи. Даже на заповедных территориях у гепарда снижаются шансы на выживание из-за конкуренции с более агрессивными хищниками - львами, гиенами и леопардами, являющимися естественными врагами гепарда, что приводит к возрастающей миграции гепарда на неохраняемые земли, где он вступает в конфликт с местным населением по причине нападения на домашний скот.

Inbreeding and genetic issues also pose a threat to cheetah populations. Due to their low genetic diversity, cheetahs are more susceptible to diseases, which can quickly wipe out entire populations. Climate change is another potential threat to cheetahs, as it can alter their habitat and reduce their prey availability.

Overall, a combination of factors, including habitat loss, poaching, inbreeding, and climate change, has led to a significant decline in cheetah populations and put them at risk of extinction.
