Animals that live in the polar regions

Walruses - These large marine mammals are found in Arctic coastal waters. Walruses have thick blubber and dense fur to withstand cold temperatures. They often haul out on ice sheets and beaches.

Penguins - Penguins are flightless sea birds that live in the southern polar region around Antarctica and subantarctic islands. Their streamlined bodies and wings adapted as flippers make them excellent swimmers. Different penguin species have various coloring for camouflage.

Polar bears, seals, walruses and penguins have all evolved unique physical and behavioral adaptations to survive the harsh polar climate. Their thick layers of fat and other insulating properties help these animals cope with near-freezing waters and long winter months.
