Отточенный кончик карандаша имеет грифель серого стального цвета, почти черного оттенка. Карандаши различаются по твердости грифеля. Она указана на оправе карандаша и обозначается буквами. Кроме одноразовых деревянных карандашей существуют многоразовые механические карандаши со сменными грифелями в постоянной оправе. Но более привычны для нас карандаши в деревянной оправе.
