Купца могли ограбить, убить в том числе и те, кто формально должен был обеспечивать безопасность торговли. За проезд через города и по дорогам он платил пошлину, мог платить за охрану от опасностей (как фактических, так и вымышленных) . У купца мог испортиться товар. Поскольку скорость доставки как товара так и информации была небольшая, за время доставки могла измениться конъюнктура рынка и цена на товар могла не окупить затраты.
