 Сегодня мы знаем о Луне больше, чем о каком-либо другом космическом  теле. Луна – самое близкое к Земле  небесное тело, расположенное на  среднем расстоянии  384 404 км от Земли.  Сила тяжести на Луне приблизительно в шесть раз меньше, чем на Земле. Вследствие  суточного вращения Земли Луна каждый день восходит на востоке, двигается по небу в западном направлении и заходит на западе. Луна делает один оборот вокруг своей оси за 27,3 суток и такое же количество времени требуется ей для завершения одного оборота вокруг Земли. Этот промежуток времени называется сидерическим или звездным месяцем. Луна всегда повернута  к Земле  одной и той же стороной, это значит, что в течение месяца мы наблюдаем всегда  одни и те же черты  „лунного лица”  и никогда не видим ее „ затылок”.  Освещаемая Солнцем, Луна меняет свой вид и проходит последовательно четыре фазы  в зависимости от ее расположения относительно Солнца.  Период полной смены фаз составляет 29,53 суток и называется синодическим месяцем.
