Еще при жизни вельможа строил себе каменную гробницу, стены которой украшали надписями, рисунками и рельефами. Египтяне верили, что всё нарисованное и высеченное из камня чудесным образом может ожить. Поэтому вельможа приказывал изображать на стенах гробниц себя, жену, детей и всё имущество, чтобы после смерти жить так же, как прежде, и даже лучше. Во время торжественного приёма он восседал на троне, держа жезл и плеть. Это значило, что в его руках было право властвовать и наказывать всех своих подданных.К правителю Египта подходили и вставали на колени и падали лицом вниз, оставаясь в такой позе, пока фараон не прикажет встать и говорить.Все почести, которыми правитель одаривал вельможу, тот приказывал перечислить в надписи на стене своей гробницы. Мало кому выпадала честь находиться перед самим фараоном. Бывало, при виде его у вельможи от волнения подкашивались ноги, он терял дар речи, не понимая, жив он или мёртв.
