В последнее время одной из главных экологических проблем республики стала балхашская катастрофа. Недавно в Алматы прошел первый форум по проблемам устойчивого развития Или-Балхашского бассейна. Участники форума обсуждали проблемы, которые уже в недалеком будущем могут привести к гибели уникального бессточного озера и вызвать экологическую катастрофу, еще более разрушительную, чем аральская.

Узким проливом Узун-Арал озеро разделяется на две обособленные части – западную, в основном пресную, и восточную, преимущественно солоноватую. Западная часть более мелководна и широка, ее береговая линия сильно изрезана небольшими заливчиками. Восточная часть узкая и длинная, ее береговая линия менее извилиста. Дно озера ровное, покрыто илом, сменяющимся на мелководье песками.
