Passive Voice: Explained

The passive voice is a grammatical construction that emphasizes the recipient of an action rather than the doer. In English, it is formed by using a form of the verb "to be" (such as "is," "was," or "has been") followed by the past participle of the main verb.

When we say that the passive voice is "natural," it means that using the passive voice is appropriate and makes sense in a given context. In certain situations, the passive voice is preferred because it places more emphasis on the object or the recipient of the action rather than the subject or the doer.

Example:

Let's consider the following sentence in active voice: "John ate the cake." In this sentence, John is the subject (doer), and the cake is the object (receiver) of the action.

Now, let's rewrite this sentence in the passive voice: "The cake was eaten by John." In this passive construction, the emphasis is on the cake (the recipient of the action) rather than John (the doer).

Task: Rewrite the sentences as passive, only where the passive is natural

The task you mentioned requires you to rewrite sentences in the passive voice, but only when it sounds natural or appropriate. This means that you should consider the context and determine whether it makes more sense to emphasize the object or recipient of the action over the subject or doer.

To complete the task, follow these steps:

1. Identify the subject (doer) and the object (receiver) of the action in each sentence. 2. Consider whether the emphasis should be on the object or the subject. 3. Rewrite the sentence in the passive voice if it sounds more natural to do so. 4. Keep the rest of the sentence structure intact.

Remember, not all sentences can be or should be rewritten in the passive voice. It is essential to use the passive voice when it adds clarity and emphasis to the sentence.

If you provide me with the sentences you need help with, I can guide you through the process of rewriting them in the passive voice.
