The American space program began in earnest in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The key event that marked the start of the program was the establishment of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on July 29, 1958.

However, the roots of the space program can be traced back to the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. After World War II, both the United States and the Soviet Union sought to develop rockets and missiles for military purposes. This led to the development of ballistic missiles, with the V-2 rocket being a notable example.

The start of the space age is often marked by the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, and its successful launch by the Soviet Union was a significant milestone in space exploration.

In response to the Soviet success with Sputnik, the United States intensified its efforts to catch up and surpass the Soviet Union in space exploration. This eventually led to the establishment of NASA in 1958, with the goal of advancing civilian space activities.

On May 5, 1961, NASA made history with the first crewed spaceflight of an American astronaut. Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space aboard the spacecraft Freedom 7 as part of the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission.

The early 1960s saw the United States and the Soviet Union engage in a space race, marked by various achievements and milestones, including John Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962, and Neil Armstrong's historic moon landing on July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 mission.

Since then, NASA has continued to be at the forefront of space exploration, conducting numerous crewed and uncrewed missions to study Earth, the Moon, and other celestial bodies, as well as conducting important scientific research in space.
