We would be so delighted when he picked us up and gave us his big bear hugs that we would squeal with pleasure. And I remember how he taught me to ride a bicycle when I was five. I had been yearning to ride with my older cousins, but I wasn't able to until Grandpa taught me how. I loved it when he would come to visit us. He always brought us little gifts that were guaranteed to make us laugh, like a ring that squirted water and a cuckoo clock with Mickey Mouse inside. And when we needed someone to talk to, Grandpa was such a good listener. He would encourage us to tell him big things and to reach for bigger goals.

Then, when I was about eight, I remember that I was afraid to go far from home. I was afraid of monsters and expected to be attacked by one at any moment. Grandpa persuaded me to walk down the street with him, past one more house each time we went out together until we got to the end of the block. Then, with him, I managed to go two blocks away from home, then three, until finally I was able to go everywhere, and I forgot about the monsters. Years later, on my 18th birthday, Grandpa let me drive him around the block in his car, and I felt so proud, even though my cousin Johnny said that Grandpa must have been crazy to let me do that.

I would have liked to be able to tell him I loved him just one more time before he died. Losing a grandpa like Grandpa Max is very sad. But I think that never having had my Grandpa Max would have been even sadder.
