Task1 Reading. Read the text and decide if the statements below are True (T), False (F) or
Doesn't Say (DS).Hurricanes and Their NamesThe World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) collects information and gives weatherforecasts to cities around the world. It is also responsible for naming hurricanes and tropicalstorms. Hurricanes start out as storms moving across the ocean. With strong winds, they cantravel at speeds of 120 to 320 kilometres per hour. When they reach land, these strong winds, together with heavy rains and large waves, can damage everything in their way. Late summer isthe main hurricane season and there can be different hurricanes travelling in the same direction atthe same time. Since each hurricane is given a different name, they can be identifiedimmediately. In the 1950s, scientists gave hurricanes and big storms only women's names. However, in 1979, the US National Weather Service decided men's names should be used too.Today, there are six lists of names for hurricanes occurring in the Atlantic. Countries in thisregion suggest the names to be on the lists. The names can be French, Spanish or English, sincethese are the languages used around the Atlantic Ocean. Each list of names is used for one year, and after all of the lists have been used, they start over. For example, list five was used in 2006and list six was used in 2007, so in 2008, list one was used again. Names don't always stay thesame. They can be changed or removed if a hurricane causes a lot of damage. For example, the“Katrina' hurricane which occurred in 2005 was the third deadliest storm in the US. Over 1800people were killed and buildings in New Orleans were completely destroyed. “Katrina' will nowbecome “Katia' on the new list. 1 Video games are becoming more and more popular.1 Countries get news about weather conditions from the WMO.2 Hurricanes begin as storms on land.3 Strong winds can cause a hurricane to last for over a week.4 Hurricane names can be male or female.5 The name 'Katia' was removed from the list.
