Not so long ago I read a book called "Flowers for Algernon". It was written by American author Daniel Keyes in 1966.  The main character of the novel is Charlie Gordon, a 32-year-old retarded man. His IQ is 68, he has bad memory but he is a kind person who is willing to study and become clever. Charlie works at a bakery and attends reading and writing classes at a special school.

Charlie agrees to be operated on for a medical experiment. After the operation he becomes very clever.  Within the next three months Charlie's IQ reaches 185. He starts to recall his childhood, his parents and his sister Norma. Tragically, the more he understands and the cleverer he becomes, the worse are his relationships with people. Charlie gets lonely...

3. Describe one significant part of the book.

Once Charlie goes to a diner where he sees a dishwasher, a boy of about sixteen. When the boy is clearing one of the tables, he drops some dishes and stands there, "dazed and frightened", holding the empty tray in his hand.  Some of the customers start whistling and laughing, so the owner comes out to see what has happened. The boy at first throws up his arms as if to ward off a blow, but when the owner just shouts at him, "All right, you dope...don't just stand there!  Get the broom and sweep up that mess.  A broom...a broom...you idiot!", the dishwasher, seeing that he is not going to be punished, smiles and does what he is told.
Charlie realizes that, like himself at one time, the boy is being made fun of because he is retarded, and doesn't even know people are being mean to him.  Furious at himself and the laughing customers, Charlie jumps up and shouts, "Leave him alone!  He can't understand.  He can't help what he is...but for God's sake, have some respect!  He's a human being!"

I think this book taught me empathy. Now I know that our humanity is not to be measured by how clever we are, but rather by our kindness and love towards others.
