The history of Great Britain The history of Great Britain dates back to the Stone Age, a period
of culture when weapons and tools were made of stone. The inhabitants of the British Isles probably came from the Iberian (Spanish) peninsula. It's hard to say anything about these people as not much was found by archaeologists. One of the mysterious monuments of prehistoric Britain is the so-called "Stonehenge"- a circular structure formed by big slabs 8,5 meters high, weighing 7 tons each. Some scientists believe it was a place of worship, others - a sort of an ancient capital or even an astronomical observatory.

As time passed, the British Isles were invaded and settled by various peoples, including the Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings, and Normans. These invasions and settlements had a profound impact on the development of the region.
The Celtic tribes dominated the British Isles until the Roman invasion in AD 43. The Romans conquered and occupied the region for nearly four centuries, leaving a lasting legacy in the form of roads, buildings, and culture. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Anglo-Saxons established several kingdoms in the region, including Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria.
The Viking invasions of the 9th and 10th centuries disrupted Anglo-Saxon rule and led to the formation of a unified England under the reign of King Alfred the Great. The Normans, led by William the Conqueror, invaded England in 1066 and established a new ruling class, introducing the French language and culture to England.
Over time, the English monarchs consolidated their power and expanded their territory, through conquests and colonization, into a vast empire that spanned the globe. The industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries transformed Great Britain into a leading industrial and economic power.
The 20th century saw significant changes in Great Britain, including the two world wars, the decline of the empire, and the rise of a welfare state. Today, Great Britain is a modern, multicultural society with a rich history and diverse cultural heritage.
