My name is Diana and I'm fifteen years old. My favourite subjects at school are Literature and Foreign Languages. To be precise I love English literature, especially the books of Arthur Conan Doyle. He was the one who created the world-famous character Sherlock Holmes. This brilliant English detective can now be seen in many films, cartoons and even computer games. No doubt that it's a fictional character, but everyone takes him for granted.

He was created in 1885 after the author wrote a series of short detective stories about him. He first appeared in a book called “Study in Scarlet”. Later Doyle wrote “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” and this book made him famous all over the world. People know that this hero lived in London on Baker Street. The house where he lived according to the books is now a museum. While visiting it, people can feel the atmosphere of the 19th century England.

Holmes was a highly intelligent man with an extremely rich imagination, observation and analytical skills. I admire his human qualities as well as his intellectual abilities. He was brave, honest, fair and multi-talented. He was well familiar with many other related sciences besides his profession, for example, anatomy, geology, chemistry, pharmacology etc. In his free time he enjoyed playing the violin and smoking a pipe.

One of his qualities that I admire most was that he never refused to help people who were in trouble. He didn't ask for large fee for his help. Sometimes he even did it for free. Taking into account his human and professional qualities, I can say that he is my favourite literary hero.

However, he wasn't the only character in Doyle's detective stories. Holmes had a sincere friend and dedicated assistant, whose name was Dr. John Watson.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson's meeting was an extraordinary event that would forever change their lives. It all began when Watson, a former army doctor, returned to London after serving in the Afghan War. Looking for a place to stay, he was introduced to Holmes, an eccentric and brilliant consulting detective, through a mutual acquaintance.

Upon their first encounter, Watson was immediately intrigued by Holmes' piercing intellect and keen observational skills. Holmes, on the other hand, saw in Watson a loyal companion and someone who could provide practical assistance during his investigations.

Their first case together involved a perplexing burglary at a prestigious art gallery. Holmes, with his razor-sharp deductive reasoning, quickly analyzed the evidence, while Watson utilized his medical expertise to examine the crime scene. Together, they unraveled the intricacies of the crime and apprehended the clever thief.

As they delved into subsequent cases, Holmes and Watson formed a deep bond of friendship and trust. Watson marveled at Holmes' extraordinary ability to notice the smallest details and draw brilliant conclusions, while Holmes valued Watson's unwavering support and his ability to offer a different perspective.

They faced numerous challenges together, from solving intricate murder mysteries to outsmarting cunning adversaries. Holmes' unorthodox methods often baffled Watson, but he learned to appreciate the genius behind them.

Their partnership extended beyond crime-solving, with Holmes often sharing his vast knowledge in various subjects, ranging from chemistry to literature, as they engaged in stimulating conversations during their leisure time. Watson, in turn, became an indispensable source of encouragement and stability for Holmes, helping him maintain a semblance of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world.

Despite their contrasting personalities, Holmes' aloofness and Watson's practicality, they complemented each other perfectly. Together, they formed an unbreakable team, their names forever intertwined in the annals of detective fiction as the legendary duo, Holmes and Watson.
