У творі Миколи Гоголя "Ніч перед Різдвом" Петербург і Диканька протиставлені між собою як чуже, холодне місто, у якому проста людина губиться і рідне село, від якого віє домашнім затишком, гармонією. Село Диканька змальовано так, що складається враження теплої, дружньої атмосфери рідного села, веселих різдвяних свят, коли вся молодь дружно ходить від хати до хати з колядками, а ті, що трішки старші у колі родини і друзів проводять Святий вечір. Перед очима виникають картини закутаного у чистий пухнастий сніг села, ясний місяць світить з чистого неба і освітлює все навкруги, з димарів будиночків високо в небо піднімаються тоненькі цівочки диму.  

Петербург же здався ковалю Вакулі холодним, незважаючи на сотні яскравих вогнів,  байдужим до звичайної людини і зверхнім. Цитата  "і враз засяяв перед ним Петербург, увесь в огні. (Тоді була з якогось приводу ілюмінація).... по обидва боки височіють чотириповерхові стіни; стукіт кінських копит, звук коліс відбивалися громом і лунали з чотирьох боків; будинки росли і ніби підіймалися із землі на кожному кроці; мости дрижали; карети літали; візники, форейтори кричали; сніг свистів під тисячею саней, що мчали звідусіль; пішоходи тулились і тиснулись попід домами...  Здивовано оглядався коваль на всі боки. Йому здавалося, що всі доми вп'ялися в нього своїми незчисленними вогняними очима і дивились". Думаю, що автор невипадково змальовує місто саме очима звичайного сільського парубка. Для Вакули в Петербурзі все виглядає чудернацьким, неприродним. Тут панують інші цінності, а світло (на відміну від небесного в Диканьці) є штучним (ілюмінація).
