Пішов раз чоловік на Великдень до лісу рубати дрова. Підходить до нього старий дід та й питає:

— Що рубаєш?

— Дрова!

— Та саме час?

— Нема чого їсти. Жінка і діти голодні, заробітку немає, а затопити й зварити треба. Що маю робити?

Дід подумав, подумав та й каже:

— Лиши рубати, йди додому.

Сказав так і зник.

Приходить чоловік додому, а там на столі у нього повно грошей. І мав цей чоловік все, що захотів.

Минув рік. На другий Великдень той чоловік собі думає: «Піду я тепер до лісу рубати, знов добуду грошей і стану ще багатшим!» Як подумав, так і вчинив. Але тоді з’явився той дід і сказав:

— Відтепер будеш, чоловіче, стукати по дереві до кінцями
