The events of 1917 in Russia, including the February Revolution which overthrew the Tsar, and the October Revolution in which the Bolsheviks seized power, had massive consequences for the country and its people, including my family. The Russian Empire collapsed and a new socialist state was established, leading to huge political and social changes.

The outbreak of civil war in Russia starting in 1918 pitted the Red Army against opposing forces who wanted to undo the Bolshevik revolution such as the White Army. My family likely found themselves having to choose sides in the conflict or risk being targeted by both sides.
