Современные исследователи религий выделяют три основные религии мира, приверженцами которых является подавляющее большинство всех верующих людей на планете. Этими религиями являются буддизм, христианство и ислам, а также многочисленные течения, ответвления и секты, основанные на этих верованиях.
Основатели мировых религий известны каждому человеку: основателем христианства считается Иисус Христос, ислама - пророк Магомед, буддизма - Сиддхартха Гаутама, позже получивший имя Будда (просветленный).

Буддизм — третья мировая религия, уступающая первым двум по численности приверженцев, но зато самая старая по времени возникновения. Буддизм зародился в Древней Индии в VI-V вв. до н. э. Основателем её считается Сидхарактха Гаутама, получивший затем имя Будда, т. е. «просветленный». Основой его служит учение о четырех благородных истинах: страдании как сущности жизни, его причинах, его существе и путях освобождения от него — вплоть до приобретения полного освобождения (нирваны).
Буддизм на мировой карте религий представлен ещё более компактным ареалом, охватывающим некоторые районы Центральной, Юго-Восточной Азии. Значительно влияние буддизма в Японии, Китае, Республики Корея.
