Etiquette at the Table
When it comes to table etiquette, there are several key points to keep in mind:
1. Seating Arrangement: The host usually determines the seating arrangement, with the most honored guests seated closest to the host. Men typically hold the chair for women and allow them to be seated first.
2. Napkin Usage: Place the napkin on your lap as soon as you sit down. Use it to gently wipe your mouth, but avoid using it to wipe your face or blow your nose. When leaving the table temporarily, place the napkin on your chair. At the end of the meal, leave the napkin to the left of your plate.
3. Utensil Usage: Start with the utensils on the outside and work your way in with each course. When finished, place your utensils diagonally across the plate, with the handles at 4 o'clock and the tips at 10 o'clock.
4. Bread and Butter: Tear off a small piece of bread and butter it individually. Avoid biting directly into the bread or buttering the entire slice at once.
5. Conversation: Engage in polite conversation with those around you, but avoid controversial or sensitive topics. It is considered impolite to speak with your mouth full or interrupt others while they are speaking.
6. Cell Phone Usage: It is generally considered impolite to use your cell phone at the table. If you must take a call, excuse yourself and step away from the table.
7. Thanking the Host: At the end of the meal, it is customary to thank the host for their hospitality and express your enjoyment of the meal.
Remember, table etiquette can vary across cultures and settings, so it's always a good idea to observe and follow the lead of those around you.
