Он воспитывался в кадетском корпусе Петербурга. Позже, став офицером, Д. влезает в долги. В связи с этим герой мечтает о богатой невесте. 
Будучи в Петербурге, 23-летний Д. получает печальные известия из дома: о болезни отца и о беззаконном отнятии их имения Кистеневки в пользу богатого соседа Кириллы Троекурова. Герой отправляется домой. Проезжая мимо имения Троекурова, Д. с нежностью вспоминает о детской дружбе с его дочерью, Марьей Кирилловной. 
Дома Д. застает отца при смерти. Он берет ведение дел в свои руки. Разрывает все отношения с Троекуровым, после смерти отца приказывает сжечь свой дом, который по суду отошел врагу. Герой вместе с верными ему крестьянами делаются разбойниками, грабящими неправедных помещиков. 
Но Д. не может забыть Машу Троекурову – он по-прежнему влюблен в нее. Ради Маши герой даже простил своего врага – Троекурова. 
Но Троекуров сосватал дочь за богатого старика-князя Верейского. Маша просит Д. похитить ее. Д. очень переживает, ведь его любимая будет женой разбойника, хотя достойна намного большего. При всем этом в душе Д. нет чувства мести к Троекурову. Он давно простил его как дворянин и благородный человек. Вот только социальные условия, судьба по отношению к Д. бесчестна. Истинная трагедия Д. состоит в том, что честный русский дворянин, привязанный к родному дому, к мысли о семье, поставлен в безвыходное положение. Для него нет пути, где бы он мог быть счастлив. В финале Д. теряет Машу – разбойники опоздали, и девушку обвенчали с Верейским. В схватке с правительственными войсками, которые давно разыскивали Д. и его шайку, героя ранят. Он распускает своих крестьян, сам же «скрывается за границу» . Его отъезд – знак не только его личного поражения, но и поражения всей России. Все лучшее исчезает из страны, виновники их гонений остаются.
