По второй версии поэма была создана на реальных событиях: дальный родственник Гоголя-Яновский, чтобы содержать винокурню скупил мертвые диши и давал на них ревизскую сказку. Яновский пошёл на это нечистое дело, т.к в то время помещики могли содержать винокурню, только если имели не менее пяти десяти крестьян. А у Яновского было всего лишь двадцать пять.
