Я ехал с охоты вечером один, на беговых дрожках. В дороге меня застала сильная гроза. Кое-как схоронился я под широким кустом и терпеливо ожидал конца ненастья. Изба состояла из одной комнаты. На самой середине висела люлька с младенцем, которую качала босая девочка лет 12-ти. Я понял, что хозяйки в избе не было. Из всех углов смотрела нищета.

Наконец я смог рассмотреть лесника. Он был высокого роста, плечист и хорошо сложён, его суровое и мужественное лицо заросло бородой, из-под широких бровей смело смотрели небольшие карие глаза. Лесник представился Фомой, по прозвищу Бирюк. От Ермолая я часто слышал рассказы о Бирюке, которого боялись все окрестные мужики. Из его леса нельзя было вынести даже вязанки хвороста — был он силён и ловок, как бес. Подкупить его было невозможно, да и со свету сжить нелегко.
