"1001 Nights" is a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales and stories compiled during the Islamic Golden Age. The author of these stories is not definitively known, as they were passed down orally for many years before being compiled into a written collection. However, the framing story of "1001 Nights" is attributed to an Arabic storyteller named Scheherazade.
In the framing story, Scheherazade is the daughter of a vizier who marries the king, Shahryar. The king, having been betrayed by his previous wife, has been marrying virgins only to have them executed the morning after their wedding night. Scheherazade, however, volunteers to marry the king and begins telling him a story on their wedding night. She cleverly leaves the story incomplete, promising to finish it the following night. This continues for 1,001 nights, during which time she tells the king a series of captivating stories, including "Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp," "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," and "The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor."
The stories within "1001 Nights" are believed to have originated from various Middle Eastern and Indian sources and were later compiled and added to by different authors over the centuries. The collection has since become one of the most famous works of world literature, influencing numerous writers and artists across the globe.
