Главный герой комедии Митрофанушка  - недоросль. Ему шестнадцать лет, а не хочет учиться, хотя наняты ему маменькой ,госпожой  Простаковой  и подкаблучником папенькой ,учителя ( бездарные. правда). В  доме живет бедная родственница Софья, которую ни в грош не ставят, несмотря на ум и красоту. Но в конце комедии , когда узнают, что у нее наследство, бегут  к ней с предложением жениться ( как дядя недоросля Скотинин, так и сам Митрофан). Действие происходит в доме Простаковых .Атмосфера здесь  угнетающая: Простакова всех по струнке  поставила, слуг ругает и бьет ."Злонравия достойные плоды" - в финале  комедии: имение разорено, Митрофан  ссорится  мать , которая отдала ему всю душу, брат Простаковой поворачивается к ней спиной.  
Денис Иванович Фонвизин не скрывает пороки общества, а, наоборот,  показывает читателю  недостатки и заставляет задуматься о том, как их исправить.
