Characteristics of the Primitive Epoch
The primitive epoch, also known as the Stone Age, was a period of human history distinguished by the development of stone tools. Some of the key characteristics of this early period include:
Hunter-gatherer societies: People lived in small nomadic bands and subsisted through hunting wild animals and gathering plant foods. Agriculture and domestication of animals had not yet developed.
Rudimentary stone tools: Chipped and flaked stone tools such as scrapers, choppers, and hand axes were used for butchering animals and processing hides, wood, and plant materials. Stone tools became more refined over time.
Lack of permanent settlements: Without agriculture, people did not stay in one place for long. They followed migratory patterns of animals and plants. Temporary camps or shelters provided housing.
Reliance on found materials: Clothing, containers, and other items were fashioned from available natural materials like animal skins, bones, shells, wood, and plant fibers. Weaving, pottery, and metallurgy had not been discovered yet.
Little technological progress: The basic toolkit and subsistence strategies remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of thousands of years during the Lower and Middle Paleolithic periods. Significant innovations like controlled use of fire and complex projectile weapons emerged later in the Upper Paleolithic.
