"Повесть о Бове королевиче" — сказание о подвигах рыцаря Бовы де Антона, сложившееся в средневековой Франции. Пришедшая на Русь в сербско-хорватском переводе в XVI веке, затем пересказанная по-белорусски и упомянутая среди литературных произведений XVII века, повесть была широко распространена вплоть до начала XX столетия. На русской почве шел процесс ее переработки, сближения с волшебной сказкой. В ней преобладает приключенческое начало. Известно несколько редакций повести.

Действие сказки начинается словами: "Не в коем было царстве, в великом государстве, в славном городе во Антоне жил-был славный король Видон". Это сказочный зачин. И в дальнейшем все напоминает сказку. Главным действующим лицом является злодейка — мать Бовы, королева Милитриса, которая извела своего мужа и вышла замуж за короля Додона. Она пыталась погубить сына. Спасаясь от козней злой матери, Бова бежал в Армянское царство и поступил на службу к королю Зензевею. Там он влюбился в дочь Зензевея Дружневну. С той поры начинаются его приключения: борьба с соперниками, которые сватаются к Дружневне, с королем Маркобруном, добивающимся ее руки, поединок с богатырем Лукопером, сыном царя Салтана Салтановича. Лукопер предстает в обличье, очень близком к былинному Идолищу (былина "Илья Муромец и Идолище поганое"): "глаза у него аки пивной котел, а промеж очми добра мужа пятдь, а промеж ушми колена стрела ляжет, а промеж плечми мерная сажень".
