The Main Events of the First Stage of World War II (1939-1941)

The first stage of World War II (1939-1941) saw rapid territorial expansion by Nazi Germany across Europe. The Soviet Union also seized territories early in the war through its pact with Germany.

In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland from the west, while the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east on September 17th. This marked the beginning of World War II in Europe. By October 6th, Poland had been partitioned between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

In April-June 1940, Germany launched offensives against Denmark, Norway, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands, quickly defeating them. The British Expeditionary Force was evacuated from Dunkirk but had to abandon much of its equipment.

On June 22nd, 1941, Germany broke its non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union and launched Operation Barbarossa, invading the western Soviet Union with the largest invasion force in human history. German forces advanced deep into Soviet territory but became bogged down in the Battle of Moscow in late 1941.

The Soviet Union played a major role in the first stage of World War II through its non-aggression pact with Germany from 1939-1941, which enabled the joint invasion and partition of Poland. It also found itself fighting for survival after Germany's massive invasion in June 1941. By the end of 1941, Germany controlled much of continental Europe while the Soviet Union had suffered immense losses but halted the German advance on Moscow.
