Раскол английского дворянства и переход его большей, обуржуазившейся части в лагерь оппозиции позволили еще недостаточно окрепшей английской буржуазии одержать победу над абсолютизмом. Связано это с тем, что в Англии исторически произошел раскол среди дворянства, часть которого стала заниматься предпринимательством, и зарабатывала не на арендной плате с крестьян, как было раньше, а чаще всего на разведении овец или строя на своей территории предприятия.

Еще до провозглашения республики парламент (получивший прозвище в народе - «охвостье») принял законодательные акты по закреплению нового государственного устройства. Первым стал специальный акт от 4 января 1649 провозгласивший палату общин верховной властью английского государства. Вторым актом от 17 марта 1649 г. королевская власть отменялась "как бесполезная, тягостная и опасная для свободы, безопасности и интересов английской нации". Третьим актом от 19 марта был принят закон о ликвидации палаты лордов. Четвертым актом от 19 мая 1649 г. специальным постановлением парламента Англия была провозглашена республикой.
