Formation of the Mughal Empire

The Mughal Empire was founded in 1526 by Babur, a descendant of both Genghis Khan and Timur. Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the last ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, at the First Battle of Panipat.

After Babur's death, his son Humayun struggled to maintain control of the nascent empire due to challenges from the Afghan Sher Shah Suri. Sher Shah defeated Humayun at the Battle of Chausa and the Second Battle of Panipat, driving him out of India. Humayun spent the next 15 years in exile before returning to reclaim the throne in 1555 with Persian support.

The Mughal Empire reached its peak during the reign of Akbar, who expanded the empire significantly and implemented several administrative, military, and economic reforms. Akbar's son Jahangir and grandson Shah Jahan continued expanding the empire and established the city of Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi.

Under the rule of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire continued to expand in South India, reaching a peak of about 2.5 million square kilometers. However, Aurangzeb's religious policies and overextension of the empire began its gradual decline. By the early 18th century, the empire had fractured into independent states under the control of local leaders known as the Nizams.
